What To Watch For The ruling in Cox’s lawsuit only pertains to her situation while the broader lawsuit from the women and doctors is seeking a ruling that applies to the entire state. A Travis County judge granted a temporary injunction against the law for “Texans with life- or health-threatening pregnancy complications,” but the state immediately appealed that injunction, so it never took effect. However, attorneys with the state argue that they don’t have the legal right to sue because none are seeking abortions because of medical challenges. ![]() The state is facing another lawsuit filed in March by a group of women and doctors challenging what the law means for complicated pregnancies, that seeks to clarify medical exceptions to Texas’ ban. ![]() Texas law allows private citizens to sue people who allow someone to get an abortion and forbids the procedure in nearly all circumstances. Texas has among the nation’s strictest abortion laws. Texas is one of 13 states that immediately outlawed abortion through so-called trigger laws after the Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to an abortion in June 2022. Cox and her husband, of Dallas, wanted to have this child and were concerned that the medical complication would prevent them from having children in the future, according to the suit. ![]()
